12 Best Parakeet Cages in 2024 (Flight, Travel & Playtop)

A parakeet cage is a place where your feathered friends will spend the most time, so pick the one that they will actually enjoy.

As budgies are horizontal fliers, you’re better off with wider cages than taller ones.

The best parakeet cage should be as big as possible but not less than 30x18x18 inches for two birds. Also, make sure the bar spacing is no larger than 1/2″.

Types Of Parakeet Cages

There are a few different options when looking to buy bird cages for Parakeets. You need to understand what a Parakeet cage should look like and the specifications that will make your pet feel most comfortable.

It is also important to note that the number of birds in a cage matter. Parakeet cages for two birds, for example, will have different recommendations compared to a cage for just one pet.

Below is an overview of the different Parakeet cages on the market.

  • Flight cage: Flight cages are generally big enough for the Parakeet to fly around on the inside.
  • Travel cage: A travel cage is generally a little smaller. This is good for times when you need to travel with your Parakeet cage setup.
  • Classic cage: A classic cage is great for a single Parakeet. This type of birdcage for Parakeet is good if space in your apartment is limited.
  • Dometop cage: This type of cage has a rounded top. It helps with flying and makes it easy to add a few toys.
  • Playtop cage: A play top cage is made for adding a series of toys and even some treats at the top region of the cage.

What Is The Best Parakeet Cage Size?

Due to the significant variety of cages that are available, it is often hard to know which one has an appropriate size for a Parakeet. It is hard to determine Parakeet cage size requirements without considering some specific factors. There are different sizes – and you do not want a cage that is too small. This will cause your Parakeet to feel trapped. A budgie cage size may be too small, for example, as a Parakeet may generally be a little bigger.

There are different recommendations for the ideal Parakeet cage size. What would be ideal for you to depend on some things?

First, consider the number of Parakeets that will be living in a single cage. You obviously need a bigger cage when there will be more than just one Parakeet in the cage. Additionally, look at the amount of space available in the room. If you are limited on space, avoid buying an exceptionally large cage.

At a minimum, make sure the cage is 18 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and at least 20 inches long. This is a good size to start with, and it will offer the Parakeet some freedom. If you have six Parakeets, then the minimum length of the cage should be 40 inches – with 18-inch depth and a 32-inch height.

Do Parakeets Like Tall Cages Or Wide Cages?

Another common question that you may ask when buying a new cage for your Parakeet is whether they would prefer a cage that is tall or rather one that is wide.

It really depends. You will, once again, need to consider how many Parakeets you place in a single cage. If there are a few Parakeets in one cage, then the needs may change.

Generally, there is not a specific preference – just make sure the cage you get has enough space for the bird or birds that will be placed on the inside.

At the same time, you should consider how the Parakeet moves. They tend to move in a horizontal direction – similar to humans. This is generally their preferred movement when the Parakeet is in their cage.

For this reason, some people do prefer to get a wider cage, compared to a taller one. In such a case, there would be more space available for the Parakeet to move in a horizontal position.

How To Choose The Best Parakeet Cage?

Choosing the right Parakeet cage is essential. There are many options available. Some of these cages are promoted primarily for Parakeets. Others are rather just promoted as “bird cages.” Do take note that you do not necessarily have to buy a product that is promoted as a “Parakeet cage.”

A few things that you should take into consideration when you buy a cage for Parakeets include:

  • Materials: Look at the materials used to construct the cage. Some materials are weaker than others. There are a few options that come with stainless steel construction. You want something that is durable and will last for a long time.
  • Small Wire Space: The space between the wires of the cage should be considered. If the space is too big, the Parakeet may try to fit through. Make sure the space is too small for this to happen.
  • Feeders and Perches: There should be built-in feeders inside the cage too. This makes the process of providing your Parakeet with their scoop of daily feed much easier.
  • Cleaning Tray: A cleaning tray makes keeping the cage clean easier. It is usually found at the bottom of the cage and simply draws out without having to open the cage itself.
  • Wheeled Stand: A cage that has wheels at the bottom is useful, as this makes moving the cage from one position to another much easier and convenient.

Do You Need To Cover A Bird Cage At Night?

People are often unsure about whether they should cover their birdcage at night – or rather leave it open.

It really depends on some things. Covering a bird at night can be useful. Some people also prefer not to cover their Parakeet with a blanket at night.

First of all, consider the environment the Parakeet is placed in – particularly the room where the cage is located. Also, understand the fact that a Parakeet need lots of sleep – this will ensure they are healthy.

A Parakeet’s cage should ideally be placed in a room where it is both quiet and dark at night. If this is not something that the room can offer, there are two options.

You can either choose to move the cage to a room that meets these requirements. If this is not an option, then rather consider covering the cage during the night.

How To Clean A Parakeet Cage?

Keeping your Parakeet’s cage clean is critical. This ensures that there is no risk of bacteria, parasites, and other issues developing inside the cage. There are a few things to consider when cleaning out the Parakeet’s cage – and some of the cleaning strategies need to be done on a daily basis.

First of all, you need to do some basic cleaning every day. This includes taking out the tray at the bottom of the cage. Throw any poop and other things in the tray out. Also, throw out any food particles left out in the feeder – and refill with new food. Also, clean out the feeder with water and put in clean water for your Parakeet to stay hydrated.

On a weekly basis, cleaning out the cage more thoroughly is important. Use a very mild soap and some water to clean the bottom tray. Clean out any poop stains and food particles in the cage itself. If there are toys inside the cage, take them out, and clean them using some water.

I’ve had such fun reading your site! Your writing is so warm and witty that it feels like we’re chatting over coffee about our feathered children. So a big thank you for sharing your wisdom with us while keeping it entertaining, too.

The professional version of the Merck Veterinary Manual recommends Minimum Cage Sizes and Bar Spacing for Budgerigars to be 20″ x 20″ x 20″ (L x W x H) and 0.5″ wide, respectively. I know this esoteric nonsense because we bought a cage (mentioned in this article) with 0.6″ bar spacing and it caused foot and leg problems for our budgie. Or so said the Avian Veterinarian to whom we donated the cage.

Thanks again for helping all the little birdies of the world.
