10 Best Nikon D5000 Lenses Worth the Money (2021)

You just got the Nikon D5000 and want something more exciting than the boring kit lens? You are in the right place.

There are three types of best Nikon D5000 lenses: a fast prime lens for portraits and all-around, a telephoto zoom for wildlife, and a macro for close-ups and art photos.

Lens choice depends a lot on what you want to shoot and the quality correlates with price. Here are our favorites.

We Recommend

Best for Bokeh/All-around

Nikkor 50mm 1.4 G

Best for Birds/Wildlife

Nikkor 200-500mm 5.6 ED

Best for Macro/Art

Nikkor 105mm 2.8G

Best Nikon D5000 Lenses

1. Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Prime Lens

camera lens

The 50mm 1.4 is probably the most popular and the best Nikon camera lens out there. It’s a fixeed prime lens (often called a nifty-fifty) that is ideal for portraits, product shots, all-around, and for low-light conditions. This lens really does it all.

This was the very first real lens I got and it has been probably the most versatile option because, in my opinion, it’s very easy to get these “real photographer shots” thanks to bokeh.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens features an adjustable aperture range from f/1.4 to f/1.6. The focal length is fixed at 50mm and cannot be adjusted.

The lens comes with a Silent Wave Motor Autofocus System. A manual focus override feature is also available. This gives you more flexibility with the shots you want to take.

2. Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED Zoom Lens

camera lens

If you want to shoot birds and wildlife then this Nikon D5000 telephoto lens is the perfect option. This is likely the best telephoto lens for Nikon D5000 that you are going to find at the moment.

As an amateur bird photographer I found this lens to be a great balance in size and cost for its tele range and performance.

The lens features a customizable focal length between 200mm and 500mm. This is a more impressive range than a large number of alternative zoom lenses on the market.

The aperture provides a constant f/5.6 exposure rating that cannot be modified – something to keep in mind before making a decision.

Even though the lens comes with a higher price tag, do take note that no accessory or lens kit is included. These will have to be purchased separately. The camera offers a minimum focus distance of 7.2 feet.

  1. I have just spent half a day happy and the other half sad since it all seems that Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR, your choice no. 5, is actually NOT compatible with my camera, Nikon D5000. Only D5000 models starting with D5200 are compatible. I would love to be proved wrong since the price of 318 Eur is really neat. There is a little chart saying so in photo #6 and a warning (in Italian) at the bottom of the page:
