In the next two sections of this Bushnell Equinox Z digital night vision monocular review, we will discuss common features in all these sizes. Later in this Equinox review, we will discuss some specific creatures in each of these sizes.

Bushnell Equinox Z vs. Equinox Z2

The Bushnell Equinox Z night vision monocular features standard resolution, whereas the Equinox Z2 has HD recording with an option to upload images to your smartphones for quick sharing directly.

The Z series comes with a compact field of view, but Z2’s has a wide field of view. So, you will have better situational awareness when you have the Equinox Z2 monocular in your hand with a better visual of your target’s surroundings.

The inbuilt infrared illuminator of the Z2 monocular features adequate night vision with adjustable intensity. It significantly increases the night vision range (900 feet) from the Z series models (750 feet).

However, the Z series is lighter in weight than the Z2 series and is better suited for using on the go.

Screen

The Equinox Z digital night vision monocular features an infrared CMOS sensor with a micro-LCD screen to make sure you can conveniently see all the details in the dark.

Its screen will display color images in the daytime. In contrast, the view will be black and white when you have night vision during the night with high contrast and clarity.

You can easily see every minute detail of the target on the screen due to the inbuilt IR illuminator. It also features multi-coated glass optics to produce quality imaging with sharp results.

Night-vision functionality

The Bushnell Equinox Z night vision monocular doesn’t come with a traditional intensifier tube, which means it is suitable for new hunters and recreational purposes.

The digital Equinox Z night vision doesn’t rely on conventional image intensifier tubes and converts light into an electronic signal. Now, this might not be that good when it comes to top-notch night vision performance.

The infrared light becomes visible when you look at it, and it’s noticeable. The good thing is, it doesn’t project a visible light like a flashlight, so it’s not as visible as a flashlight. The bad thing is, if you’re concerned about stealth mode, this won’t work for you because your target will run away as soon as it sees the light.

User interface

The Bushnell Equinox Z digital night vision monocular comes with a straightforward user interface that’s not difficult to understand even if you are using such a device for the first time.

All the controls are easily accessible on top of the device, while the screen also has a very simplistic display. During the daytime, the display will show colored images, while when the IR illuminator is on, it will show black and white images with sharp details.

The company has used multi-coated lenses that increase light transmission and reduces glare to ensure better image quality with sharper details.

Body and grip

The Bushnell Equinox Z monocular comes with a very ergonomic design and a hand strap that is pretty comfortable to hold even for long hours on the go. However, the Z2 monoculars are slightly heavy to hold because they are equipped with HD optics.

This monocular has a water-resistant housing and is tripod mountable due to the Picatinny rail for accessory mounting.

All the controls are straightforward to access even when you are using the device with a single hand. It’s just effortless to use this monocular even when you are on the move.

Additional functionalities

The Bushnell monocular can also take images and record videos and audio for you due to the quality IR CMOS sensor inside it. This feature is extremely important for hunters and wildlife observers.

These binoculars use standard AA-size batteries, which are easily available anywhere. Although the batteries last up to 2 hours, you can quickly replace them by carrying an extra 4 AA sets.

The device also features a micro-SD card slot that allows you to store your media and transfer it to other devices.

Bushnell Equinox Z user reviews

The Bushnell Equinox Z comes with an average user rating of 4.4 stars that is not bad by any stretch of the imagination stretch.

Most people have loved using these monoculars for recreational purposes. They have mentioned that the images are quite clear with excellent contrast and the user interface is quite friendly.

However, some people have complained about the buttons being slightly tricky to access for single-handed use. Some have also mentioned that the videos are a bit grainy at full magnification.

I spent 23 years in the Marine Corps and fully understand the importance of quality optics and night vision devices. I researched many products looking for an entry-level decision device and decided to take a chance on this one. This night vision device exceeded all my expectations. Yes, they are GEN1, but they were very clear, and the recording and picture function was impressive. The money I spent was WELL spent and will buy again!!!!

Our verdict

I preferred the 40mm lens over the 50mm because I don’t want to miss a moving target slipping through the night due to short FoV. It’s also useful for long-term viewing because it comes with a tripod mounting option.

Overall, Bushnell Equinox Z digital thermal monocular is a good choice for new hunters, hitchhikers, and wildlife photographers. You can choose from six different sizes. Z 4.5×40 is the most popular as it balances out the optics power with a lightweight design.
